Gathering all the belongings they could carry they fled en masse across the ice covered mountains that separate Iraq from Turkey. Exhausted from the trek on foot many of the thousands died from acute sickness. Those that survived ended up in a barren no man’s land near the town of Isikveren where they camped as best they could while awaiting aid from NGO’s.
